Stony Point Fishing Shack-1

Up on the North Shore of MN, there exists a couple of fishing shacks. I wish I could tell you more about the history of them. All I could find in my research online is that they were part of someone’s fishing operation. Whether commercial or private, I don’t know. I’d love to know more about them. I suspect the locals probably know the history. I intend to find out that history.

This shack, based on my research of photographs of that particular area, is the less photographed of the two. <!–more click here to keep reading– >It is a rather hidden structure even as it sits at the front part of a grove of trees and only a hundred feet or so from the other, more known and photographed, fishing shack. On that day, I was drawn to this shack that seems resigned to be “second nature” alongside its sibling.

As I walked by and around it, I beheld the work of nature upon this humble shack – the weathered look the years had carved upon it.

As I came to and stopped at the door, my eyes slowly scanned the frame around the door and the surrounding wood cojoined to encapsulate the skeletal frame of the structure. I soaked in the rough-hewn wood, the knots, the grain, the “veins” of the wood. Such beauty. Such unrefined artistry. Such character.

Character. Character seems, to me, to be something that is earned. Something that is fostered, shaped and molded. It speaks of an ongoing active pursuit. Character is a result of years of being “weathered”. It is not always a refined process; in fact, quite often, is very messy. However, I do believe there is a controlling aspect in the evolving stages of our character. Unlike the shack above which is at the mercy of what nature throws at her, we do have the power to steer the course of our character development.

Do you like what you see in yourself? Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t. I can’t help but think of the words of Paul in the Bible – indulge me for a moment to let me share my own personal beliefs. He says, “…I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway…I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does…”

There is a plethora of good characters we could endeavor to promote. Character building is never easy though it is always rewarding. For instance, I can do better at treasuring my wife. Do I really need to always be right with my wife even if I am right? 😉Fortunately I can kid like that about my wife….I think…🙄.

What about our friends? I love the phrasing of this saying, “Hatred starts fights, but love pulls a quilt over the bickering.” I’m not saying we, as friends or spouses or whatever the relationship, should just sweep it under the rug. I am saying consider whether you need to say it, what you need to say, when you need to say it and how you should say it. 

Character can be beautiful. Character can also be ugly. Take inventory of what are your strong and weak characters. Want to be bold? Ask your spouse and/or friends to list your character strengths and weaknesses. Then continue life’s journey. Continue to promote those choices that will “ingrain” deeply the strong/positive characters. Make the change needed to not just address but obliterate the weak/negative characters. It’s not easy but it is rewarding.

    Thank you Steve. I love the picture and how you make the correlation to character in our lives. God has given each one of us what He ordained for us to be and by following His leading we will be able to build character in our lives

    The most annoying thing is… he usually is right! But as a man of character he does not need to always let me know that! LOL! I would like to order a print of the top photo please to make up for you always being right. 😍
